DESCRIPTION
Zinsser Watertite is an oil-based paint product used to stop water from penetrating a surface. It holds back up to 34 psi of water pressure. It is mostly used in basements and cellars; however it can also be used on outside walls to protect them from the elements, and even concrete slabs prior to installing a floor.
This paint comes in white and is a two-coat system, however you can paint over it with any paint you like. Watertite can be applied to concrete, stucco, cement, brick, cinder block and other masonry surfaces.
Zinsser Watertite is touch dry after an hour, the recoat time is 4 hours, and it’s fully cured after around a week, however drying times vary depending on conditions. You should use a brush to apply the first coat, and then brush and roller to apply the second.
RECOMMENDED USE
For application on interior and exterior concrete, stucco, cement, cinder block and other masonry surfaces. Product is ideal for interior basement walls and for sealing concrete basement slabs prior to installing flooring (not recommended for foot traffic). Can also be applied on exterior foundations and retaining walls, above and below grade. Solvent based.
SURFACE PREPARATION
New or unpainted masonry: Surface must be clean and free of dirt, grease, oil, soap, and other contaminants. New masonry must cure at least 30 days before applying waterproofer. Salting or efflorescence (a white powdery deposit often found on walls) must be removed (“etched”) with a solution of hydrochloric acid or concrete etching compound. Follow manufacturer’s directions and safety precautions. Rinse the surface thoroughly with water after application. Remove all existing mold and mildew. Use a solution of 1 teacup household bleach per litre water or use a mildew cleaner. For commercial buildings, follow appropriate guidelines for mould removal (if there is concern about mould and mildew behind walls, underneath flooring, in ventilation systems or other unseen areas, contact a professional who specializes in mould and mildew remediation. Remove exterior mould and mildew. Previously painted surfaces: WATERTITE is guaranteed to produce a waterproof finish when applied to bare masonry. It can be used over previously painted, non-glossy surfaces, however its waterproofing ability is then dependent upon the integrity of the previous coating. For best results, remove as much of the old coating as possible by manually scraping the surface, followed by thorough wire brushing. A belt power sander with a 50 grit-sanding belt is also effective. Exterior surfaces should be cleaned by using high pressure (steam) cleaning or grit blasting to remove all loose and scaling paint and cement. Clean all surfaces with a solution of hydrochloric acid wash and rinse the surface thoroughly with water. Loose sand and grit caused by acid etching must be removed from the surface by vacuuming or sweeping.
Patching Water Leaks and Cracks: all holes & cracks, especially active water leaks, must be patched with hydraulic cement. Seal the joint where the floor and wall meet with hydraulic cement. Follow manufacturer’s directions for dry time, etc.
APPLICATION CONDITIONS
Temperature of air, substrate and coating material 10°C or higher. To ensure against accumulation of solvent vapours, be sure to open all windows and doors. Use a non-sparking exhaust fan to provide air movement. Extinguish all flames and pilot ights at water heaters and heating systems. Turn off air/heating systems at thermostat.
APPLICATION & THINNING: BRUSH
Liberally apply the first coat using a thick polyester bristle brush, or by rolling a small section (1m x 1m), and then using a brush to work the coating into the pores of the masonry. Apply as much paint as necessary to produce a continuous, pinhole free film.
APPLICATION & THINNING: ROLLER
Use a 24 mm nap roller for unpainted, porous surfaces, and an 18 mm nap roller for smooth.
CLEANING OF EQUIPMENT / SPILLS
Wipe up fresh spills and drips with a rag and paint thinner. To minimize solvent odors, use odorless mineral spirits and clean application tools outside of the work area. or previously painted surfaces. The second coat can be brushed or rolled.
